A spellbinding shade of blue

Once every few years we are treated to a movie masterpiece, one of those stories that captivates our hearts and minds, while our eyes feast on its imagery. Into The Woods is definitely one of these movies: for two hours I was in this fantastic world, scary, funny, magic, and now i will keep it forever in my heart. A musical based on a hotchpotch of tales, it is not just a movie for kids,  during the movie I often found myself reflecting on some of the philosophical aspects of life on this planet, thoughts that surely didn’t cross the mind of my tenner, although I hope she got the sense of it somehow unconsciously. The cast, the cast is great, but Meryl Streep is simply FANTASTIC! streep-into-the-woodsIn this movie, she displays her acting (and singing!) supreme mastery. Chris Pine was also a nice surprise, it’s strange to see this face, usually associated with action characters, singing in full fairy tale regalia, and with a healthy vein of irony. Also unusual is Anna Kendrick, as Cinderella, not the usual fairy tale nordic beauty, actually with her mediterranean looks, until a few years ago she would have been casted for one of the stepsisters in a nanosec. Johnny Depp makes a brief but memorable appearance as the wolf -watch out for the very cinematic exit on his first scene. The soundtrack is the path that guides around these strange facts and familiar characters, a nice balance of musical movie standards, and unexpected twists and quips, catchy songs and almost operatic melodrama flow and weave us into the story. Again Streep greatness in action there, and yes I want blue hair like her (in the second part). As my girl rightly summed up at the end of the movie: it was amazing, go watch it!
